Question 1.1

Is Garretís work [as discussed in this chapter] inherently any better than the junk mail I received from my ISP?

. . . and here's the notes you'll need . . .

I don't actually have the book with me [I came to Wellington and forgot it!], but I think I remember Poyner referencing the political background that Garret was appropriating with the Buzzcocks cover [Russian Revolution - Lizzitsky?]. I guess Garret's referencing is more oblique than my Ihug example, and whereas he's taken stylistic/formal references only, the Ihug example actually uses a recognisable image of a communist dictator to try and make more money ñ so it does seem to be inherently more evil.

Hey Lisa, the inflight magazine that I read on the way up here had a picture of Niki Caro on the cover [director of Whale rider - Pakeha] and on it she was wearing the latest Workshop T-shirt which features a big Tiki on it, and retails for about $160 . . . I expected an interesting article about appropriation and who can do what etc in the article, but it was just some banal interview about her favourite food, movies etc. What did you think about her doing that film? And what about them posing her in that t-shirt for the cover of the mag?

last Thurs:
Garretts work is different since he was doing it in another time, meaning is stripped and then re-applied, stripped and re-contextualised, de-re-contextualised...your ISP are probably using a signifier many times removed from itís position in space/time. A bit like those images of ìcheîñ what do they mean now? something very PoMo I guess..
