Is the computer more than just a tool? How much are we as visual creatives being lead by programmers and other leaders in technological advancements, should Graphic Designers/Typographers be more involved in technological developments? For example: Arial becoming a default font and why did typewriting conventions/shortcuts become a general standard over other historical/developed typographic conventions?

Yeah I see it as a tool. But a very valuable one that I wouldn't want to be without. I think the important thing for print designers to remember is that the Mac is only one of the tools used in the process though. The press is a tool, as was a little piece of lead or wood with a letterfrom on it. I do see that work carries the 'aesthetic of the tool' quite often, esp specific software – which seems to mean we go through periods where 90% of designers make work that looks the same . . . which gets pretty boring [I'm thinking of rave culture in particular – thank god that seems to be dying off!].

Re the typewritting bit, I don't know for sure? My guess would be because there was probably a whole lot more secretaries than designers around?
